The Jetta was redesigned for 2019. It has a classy interior and an available manual transmission. The most noticeable change is the addition of Volkswagen MQB architecture. The new Jetta is also slightly larger than its predecessor. It also offers more standard and optional features compared to previous models.

There were a few significant changes for the Jetta in 2018. It offered two new trims, the Wolfsburg and SE Sport. The six-speed transmission for the sports GLI was also removed from the lineup. The Wolfsburg has leatherette seats, and the SE Sport features black interior and a rear spoiler. The exterior trim is also black on the SE Sport. The 2018 Jetta also featured a new chrome grille and a few new wheel designs.

Performance

The responsive 1.4-liter 147-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine was carried over from 2018 for 2019. It can produce 184-lb torque at 1400rpm. The 2019 Jetta has two new transmissions. The six-speed manual transmission is a nice upgrade to the previous five-speed manual. The manual transmission is only used on the base model. It has a progressive clutch and an impressive weighted shifter. The new eight-speed automatic transmission replaced the previous six-speed tranny. It shifts quickly and smoothly. As a bonus, the automatic offers manual control. Gas mileage for all trims is rated at 30mpg city and 40mpg highway.

For 2018, the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine is available on the Jetta S, Wolfsburg and SE trims. A 5-speed transmission is standard. It features precise shifting and a light clutch. A smooth shifting 6-speed automatic transmission is optional. SE Sport and SEL trims have an available 1.8-liter 170-hp engine capable of producing 184 lb-ft torque. The GLI features a powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of producing 210-hp and 207 lb-ft torque. The 1.4-liter engine with automatic transmission is rated at 28mpg city and 38mpg highway. The manual transmission improves to 40mpg highway. The 1.8 and 2.0-liters are rated at 24mpg city and 33mpg highway.

Appearance

The 2019 Jetta has improved exterior styling similar to the Tiguan crossover. It also offers an R-line model with a sporty appearance. The other trims have a traditional sedan design with a touch of elegance. Standard LED headlights gives it a unique look. The SEL trims upgrade to LED projection headlights with halo running lights. The wheelbase size increased by 1.3 inches over its predecessor.

The defined lines and conservative detailing gives the 2018 Jetta an upscale look. Alloy wheels range from 16-18-inches depending on the trim. Most trims received a new chrome grille. The Wolfsburg, SE Sport, and GLI have different bumpers and some other minor unique details.

Features

The 2019 Jetta S features the following standard and optional equipment: Cloth upholstery, steering wheel audio controls, 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple and Android compatibility and the Driver Assistance Package. The Jetta SE adds a panoramic sunroof, leather steering wheel, keyless start/stop, synthetic leather interior, and automatic climate control. The SEL upgrades to a 10.25-inch digital cockpit TFT screen, leather interior, heated and cooled front seats, GPS navigation, beats speakers and adaptive cruise control.

The 2018 Jetta S features the following: Power windows, power locks and mirrors, cloth upholstery, Bluetooth, a backup camera and a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Wolfsburg steps up to fog lights, leather gear shift, heated seats, rear armrest, and synthetic leather interior. The SE upgrades to a moonroof, leather steering wheel with audio control, keyless start/stop, blind spot warning, satellite radio, and a 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The SEL adds dual-zone climate control, front collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and Fender-branded audio. The GLI has sports seats, paddle shifters, and 18-inch wheels. All trims feature a 6-year, 72,000-mile warranty.
